Why it matters
Medicare rates every certified nursing home one to five stars, but families rarely see them side by side, and the differences are stark. In one Chicago neighborhood, a five-star home and a one-star home with a recent abuse citation sit less than a mile apart. Knowing which is which, before a stressful tour, is the whole job.
What you get
Medicare's Care Compare has the data, but it's built to look up one home at a time. This turns it into a single report you can read at the kitchen table with the family.
01
The Medicare-certified nursing homes closest to your ZIP, sorted by distance, side by side.
02
Overall, health-inspection, staffing, and quality, not just the headline star that hides the rest.
03
The single best day-to-day predictor of care, in numbers, so a thinly-staffed 4-star can't hide.
04
Any home with a recent CMS abuse citation or a fine is flagged, so nothing surprises you later.
05
Which ratings are objective inspections and which are partly self-reported, so you read them right.
06
The specific questions about staffing, turnover, and nights and weekends that a rating can't answer.
Honest about the data
We'd rather you trust this because it's straight with you. CMS star ratings are genuinely useful, but they're a starting point, not a verdict: the health-inspection rating (from unannounced on-site surveys) is the most objective, staffing hours predict day-to-day care better than the headline star, and the quality-measure rating leans partly on what the home reports about itself. Ratings also lag real changes and update quarterly. The report tells you all of that, so you weight the numbers correctly and then trust your own visit.
